I am a current biomedical science student. I would just like to explain in essence what cas9-CRISPR is. It's a method that bacteria use to modify their own genome (DNA) in order to defend from viruses. This method for DNA modification will most likely involve In Virtro usage initially as the method requires the protein complex to be inserted into target cells with our desired gene to insert into the desired site and a template of the site to insert it into. The injecting it into an adult will be difficult to pull off as in the case of CF (Cystic Fibrosis) you would need to modify every single cell that lines the wall of the respiratory tract and the stem cells they arise from (maybe even all cells in the body too), this is an issue we are having with gene therapy which does this with modified viruses. The issue is too many cells to modify which is why in vitro is prefered as it can be only 5-100 cells. Also, another thing stem cells are precursor cells to all of our cells or a particular cell lineage (depends on the type). Although the topic of stem cells is a multifaceted topic I'll keep it brief. Stem cells in the case of Embryonic Stemcells are only found in Umbilical cords and embryos these are pretty much the golden goose egg of stem cells they can produce any cell in the body. Other stem cells exist like Puliropent stem cells which can produce cells of particular lineage a good example is HSC which can produce any blood cell in the body these are found in many places throughout out the body in an adult and especially in a foetus in this case HSC are found in bone marrow in humans. Stem cells aren't this magical thing that you can inject or rub onto something and magically heal something it requires them to be "activated" or induced to differentiate into a particular cell line. So the notion that you can just inject them into the brain and it fixes it is very unlikely to even work. Stem cells would be more useful in producing organs or tissue identical to the patient to be transplanted into them in the case of stem cells and the Nervous system (brain too) that's even more complicated since neurogenesis (the brain repairing itself) is extremely delicate and complicated involving many signalling factors. Of course I don't expect every single person to understand this nor know this I am just frustrated at the fact for the past times you have brought up both topics it's very idealised or exaggerated (which makes sense for comedic purposes) but when there are genuine talks about it there are inaccuracies which frustrate me. I get how some of the things you guys say about it are for jokes but I hope this gives you some improved understanding instead of the bare minimum like stem cells and CRISPR are magical things that will solve everything. Also wtf Charlie the stem cells in pregnancy are creating the child not used by the mother to heal.
