The consensus is still generally no, but there’s an argument for them being living, too. (They can also be beneficial too!) However regardless of what benefit they gave, it will always end badly for the host (due to how viruses replicate). I could imagine a virus giving a short term benefit but in the end, they sequester our cells resources, hijack our cellular machinery, and replicate until they burst open the very cell they called home before moving onto to the next... And doing it all over again. Seeing as a key mechanism to viral survival is the eventual death of our cells, I believe this is why we have no 'beneficial viruses'. Just my take on it. I found it interesting to think about. Source: 3rd year microbiology student. Idk I'm probably talking out my ass.
