I'm a ground service agent for a fairly large Canadian airline, and the things they make us do over threat of much more than a lost job is unreal. Most of us take the extra time to do things properly, but for some of the younger guys who aren't so good at dealing with higher ups yelling in your face, things happen. When you mentioned the door seal key card thing I shook my head, because your reactions to it brought me back down from the peak of absurdity. That is done every single day. Or screws will be tightened with thumbnails. Or damage to the plane's exterior will be shrugged off so that flight crews don't end up delayed. Pilots see us as expendable grunts while they have "real careers" and will pressure us incessantly to look the other way on huge maintenance red flags. Planes will frequently land for months on end with broken door seals, missing nuts and screws, broken door latches, etc etc. And when we do make reports, we are assured they will be looked at. And then the plane comes back a month later in even worse condition. Pilots will often respond to new information about issues with the plane with a "fuck it, this is my last flight of the day". It's bad. I will never let anyone I care about fly unless absolutely necessary. This sounds messy and I didn't proof read because I'm currently working on setting up the redeye flight for the morning and don't have much time to do anything in my downtime besides write a dozen more reports on horribly neglected maintenance issues. The airline industry is the worst industry I've ever worked for, and I've been in some of the worst. The fact that these planes don't go down more often is miraculous.
