2024-05-03 01:53:22 +0000 UTCthere's a great vid about the el faro from a channel called brick immortar which I recommend to anyone interested, but in short the captain knew it would be dangerous to try and go through the hurricane, but he was up for promotion and was worried that if he took a longer route around the storm he would lose it, so he chose to try and go through it before it strengthened (against the wishes of his crew). the ship itself was also poorly maintained, and cargo wasn't properly tied down which also contributed to its sinking. in a lot of brick immortars other vids, a common thread between shipwrecks is that after WW2, the u.s. government auctioned off it's fleets of mass produced merchant ships to private companies, some of which later sank due to poor maintenance, being used longer than what they were built for, and being exempt from modern safety standards due to their age. I'm not sure if this is the case but I wouldn't be surprised if some of the other ships that sank in the triangle post WW2 were these same ships
