We have different interpretations of what "next level writing" is then lol, also reply in this thread instead of making a new comment bro, so many people do this on patreon LOL. But yeah how you interpret good writing is also personal preference. If a story can't keep my attention more than another, to me the one that keeps my attention and has me more intrigued is the one with better writing. Its what you value in a script that decides what good writing is. Writing is not as objective as you're tryna make it seem

I mean what you find more interesting is a personal reference Johnny/Chris cos end of the day what you enjoy more is really down to your taste for sure. But if we critically analyse hxh you do have to put your hands up and say it’s a next level writing and one of the best ever shonen. It doesn’t have to be in your top 10 favourite anime or anything but in terms of pure quality and writing it does deserve to be up there with some of the best shounen aka attack on titan and fma brotherhood

Fma brotherhood has some of the most underrated fighting sequences they are well animated and hand drawn completely, cos the story and characters plus the music are so good people forget to appreciate the action when it comes

I definitely am liking this anime more the second time through even after knowing all I know. Pretty crazy actually since this was already high on my list.

Thats all well and good, but the tie ins/ vague foreshadows don't make me resonate anymore with the stories overall plot. Those are cool details and nice ways to tell a story, but it does little for my enjoyment of the story as a whole. Naruto just has a more interesting story to me, and of course many others

A lot of people have echoed this sentiment, but Fullmetal Alchemist is considered one of the greatest anime of all time, if not the greatest SHONEN anime of all time because of the world, story, and characters. The action and fight animation is amazing, but battles aren't the main focus of the show. At it's core, it's the story of two brothers trying to reclaim what was taken from them, the story just uses fights as a means to that end. The first 10ish episodes can feel slow, but that's because the world that Fullmetal Alchemist takes place in is HUGE. Key plot points and hints are established VERY early on and need to be remembered for future episodes. You can't really fall in love with the characters, story, or setting unless you have time to do so. That's my two cents at least

Tbh it’s my bad for bringing up naruto, it is definitely decent writing and nothing special. But it definitely has top tier characters, music and overall influence/attachment. It’s part of the big 3 for a reason for sure. I think the big 3 shouldn’t be mentioned with other elite anime cos they are both completely different takes.

Look at it this way, it’s partial nostalgia for naruto which when i say mid I don’t mean bad or anything. It’s just thats I’ve seen much better writing elsewhere if that makes sense. Naruto is still part of the big 3 regardless and has the braoded appeal. Reason why even when you rewatch it now that it’s still good is because you watched it at a young age so it will forever be in your heart. While hxh regardless of it amazing writing that people start saying naruto is a rip off which might trigger you. When in fact they are both entirely different worlds. Naruto has way more episodes and fillers which is unfair on hxh to compare with

No it’s not because it’s harder to catch, but it’s small details that you notice if you pay attention from the first couple arcs that you get rewarded later on. For example; During the Hunter Exam, when he tested Gon and Killua on the airship, Netero was able to fend them both off while using only his right arm and left leg. In his final battle against Meruem and prior to activating the Miniature Rose, he is left with only his right arm and left leg after Meruem's assault. That’s like a tease right from the beginning of netero which is very hot imo that they managed to execute thats. Another example is Knov mocks Killua for his terror upon feeling a Royal Guard's aura. Later on, however, he suffers an incapacitating mental breakdown upon seeing Shaiapouf's En. These parallels and comebacks make the earier arcs worth it as is ties very cleverly to the later arcs. Also, Unlike previous story arcs in the series, this is the first one in which neither Gon nor any of the other three main characters have any interaction with the main antagonist (Meruem). I can keep going if you want, it aint a matter of being indirect . It’s about paying attention to details that they call back to later on unlike ahem 7 deadly which does it so late. If you want more examples let me know i can keep stating them

Is it high level because it's harder to catch or understand? That seems to be the consensus I get from the fans. Having indirect story telling to me doesn't automatically make a story good in my eyes. It just makes it more convoluted and led to be based off interpretation by the viewers which is not what everyone values in story telling. To me it's less about how the story is told and more of the impact it has on people

Not gonna lie it might be nostalgia, idk, but even when I go back to rewatch it now I still enjoy it. It's hard for me to go back and rewatch hunter x hunter on my own, i dont have the attatchment to its story that I do with Naruto. Iv seen a couple explanation videos on hxh of why it has good writing. But if it needs to be explained to me instead of having a direct impact on me while I was watching it what's the point. The explanation videos I have seen on the Chimera Ant arc have seemed more like interpretations of the story based on the information we got rather than what it is. I was never a big fan of that kind of metaphorical and indirect story telling that hxh has

There’s like 10 different really high level major writing references and details of hxh does that i can name from the palm of my hand but it requires pictures to show proof and so on. I think you’re really underestimating hxh writing and giving too much credit to a cultural icon in naruto which is like B class writing

I mean I don’t wanna shit on naruto, it’s decent writing but a lot of love it gets is down to nostalgia strings. As for hxh you said that you only saw 1 emotional scene, i mean that’s down to you what you found sad or not. But making you sad is scratching the surface of writing, there’s so much more like referencesc little hints from like the first couple arcs that get mentioned in the chimera arc. The parallels, references and so much more make hunter x hunter a high level writing series. If you had Twitter, instagram or anything I could sens you the proof and explain why hxh has god tier writing

I wouldn't call Naruto mid tier story telling, idk why people talk down on Naruto so much, I just always assume its because its popular and people always like to be hipster about shit lol. I definitely found Narutos story telling a lot more emotionally impactful as a whole compared to something like Hunter X Hunter. The Chimera Ant Arc had one of the most emotional scenes in anime history, but it was one scene in a series of over 100 episodes. Naruto just gave me a more consistent emotional attachment to its huge narrative.

fmab episode 10 onwards is completely manga sourced and new which fma 2003 doesnt have. fmab took 10 episodes to explain a certain arc which fma 2003 did in like 25 episodes. after ep25 on the old fma the plot diverged into non canon material cos it got up to date with the manga. the first 1p ep of fmab summarise the first half of the old fma but everything in brotherhood follows the manga completely and even surpasses it

i think the action assumption is due to a lot of youtubers basing top anime on naruto and dbz which are action packed but mid tier storytelling compared to attack on titan, fma brotherhood, hunter x hunter and code geass.

All of this is story development that is setting up for the main juiciness, an epic scene or fight without buildup is pointless. This series utilises build up perfectly
