To be fair it wasn't just the drill, fire nation brought tanks too. With their fighting force I'm thinking they just wanted a foothold to launch further invasions in the future. Earth kingdom is a huge continent but they have been slowly losing more ground (just look at all the refugees) remember they recently took over Omashu as well.

Ba Sing Se consists of two walls he got thru the first one but quit after his son died. Sokka got the map from the mechanic that they froze.
