He and Mako grew up on the streets eating out of dumpsters plus their family in squalor in the lower ring. Kuvira got his support along with a lot of people cuz she is helping. Her back story shows it clearly but even from her conversation with Suyin they showed Kuvira was granted her powers and was the only one to step up after the queen was murdered.
