Basically merlin who was a wizard that chooses kings placed a sword into a stone tablet called Caliburn and foretold that only the worthy king of Britain could pull the sword from the stone. This is what Arthur did however the sword from the stone called caliburn was broken in a battle so Arthur had to go get a new sword from the lady of the lake who is basically a fairy enchantress that lives in the lake and she gave Arthur Excalibur (the sword of promised victory or the sword of holy light) the sword you see her use in the series. The lady of the lake also blessed Arthur's body which gave him various buffs including the ability to traverse any body of water
