Code Geass Season 1 Episode 9 UNCUT REACTION | Refrain

Honestly upon rewatching this episode, I think the kallen/her mother issue is supposed to be a loose allegory for Lelouch and Suzaku. Kallen is like lelouch where she believes only rebellion and violence is the only way to make a difference and change things. Fighting for revenge. And kallens mother does the opposte. She doesnt fight the system, but actually uses it to try and raise up kallen to a position of privlege. IE trying to make changes from within. Kallen is frustrated because she doesnt understand what her mother was doing until the refrain scene. To her it seems like shes just going along with, because she basically is. But in doing so it puts her in a position to make some changes, even if its only getting kallen to be treated as an Britanian. So yeah, I think it does have more significance at least thematically than I originally thought when I first watched this series. More than just character development from kallen but how it relates to the greater plot as a whole. Thats my 2 cents.

I think we knew why, just the thought of someone daughter treating there mother poorly, when there already treated like shit by the people she works for seem kinda ridiculous. She could of not talked so much shit to her and still felt the way she felt. Its hard for us to understand who would treat there mother like that in the context of their situation. Like how could she not show a shred of sympathy

To explain for Chris: the reason Kallen disliked her mother was the same reason she slapped Lelouch when he told her about how he feels about Britannia. Kallen is very prideful and hates the fact that people are so weak that they would rather swallow their pride and bow to Britannia rather than stand up against the injustice. It's exactly what she viewed what her her mother was doing. She thought that her mother had no shame or pride as a woman to be living in the same house as the stepmother as a servant which is why she found her depressing or pathetic. However she didn't realize the only reason her mom put up with all the bs is so that Kallen could lead a life of privilege as a rich britannian student rather than a poor japanese person (since Kallen is half britannian she can live in either world)
