Even if he could locate the gunshot wound without looking, did he treat her gunshot wound with his eyes closed? And even if her gunshot wound wasnt in a "nono area" that means he still didnt do a wound check elsewhere. It wouldve been less creepy if he didnt say that because it feels like hes covering something up instead of just sticking with the "yeah it was a medical emergency" excuse lol. He cared about shirley so he didn't want to use it to kill herself and he knew she was suffering because of the knowledge she had about him and her father so he took away all her painful memories. Obviously he knew this wouldn't work long term because the student council would question it but it was the best short term solution to her knowing his identity.
