Mao must have watched a bunch of "Saw" movies while recovering in the hospital. "I want to play a game" And yeah Suzaku is basically the anime protaganist with his borderline super human abilities. Thats part of what makes code geass a breath of fresh air. Hes the mega mind to suzakus metro man.

2022-07-16 20:35:43 +0000 UTCAnother touch that you missed is that when suzaku explained the range of the bombs explosion to be around 500 to 600 meters Lelouch realized that in order for Mao to be safe from the explosion he would need to be outside the 500m range of his geass power. This means Mao wouldnnot be able to read lelouchs thoughts at that moment when lelouch thought of the plan to geass himself and that he couldn't read suzakus mind either. So he wouldn't have known about lelouchs plan to geass himself to forget. Lelouch explained in episode 4 that he can use mirrors or glass to reflect light to make his geass work which hinted that it was possible to also geass himself. Additionally, Mao couldn't tell that suzaku was pulling up because Lelouch made sure his geass ability was focused on him by trying to think of different things to confuse Mao so he wouldn't notice suzaku pulling up

2022-07-16 17:19:00 +0000 UTCThe reason Lelouch couldn't use his geass on Mao till now is because Mao already knew lelouchs geass ability required direct eye contact and hence he wore goggles to block the direct eye contact. When suzaku punched Mao he knocked off those goggles he was wearing so they were no longer blocking lelouchs power from working. Not to mention Mao would be able to mind read and know Lelouch would try to geass him too. The issue is when your 500 meters in his range he always knows what your going to do.
