Is Solo Leveling Better Than Sword Art Online Conceptually?

Comments

You should specify which season because every season is a different game and different concepts. I personally think the season 3-4 soul translator concept is super cool

RNG Master

Well for those of you who do, let us know lol

Sao's concept in season 1 is cooler but it goes off the rails onwards. Solo leveling follows the gamelike formula for nearly the entirety of it

Yes to all of those it's too early in the story

RNG Master

Off the top of my head Overlord .Hack Tron Jumanji( bored game but you get it) Log horizon Life Reset Awaken online Ritualist And a fuckton of Korean WN SAO was definitely a trailblazer though

For me I think the "gamelike" part is way better handled in solo leveling than in sao. You'll see going on in the show don't want to spoil anything

Alo .

Interesting take... what other stories are similar in Sword Art's genre? Curious because nothing's coming to mind.

I haven't read the manwa, so I'm not sure I have a full enough grasp on the concept for Solo Leveling to make that call, but 3 episodes in I'd say no. The stakes aren't as high, although I'm sure (hope) there's a larger plot out there we just haven't been introduced to yet. The story so far lacks an antagonist as well, assuming they just haven't been introduced yet. There are similarities conceptually, with Sword Art's being more rooted in a possible reality, whereas Solo Leveling's is more fantasy, and that makes Sword Arts's a little more intriguing for me personally. I think with the world building in Sword Art they've tried to build on a possible realistic reality and that places limitations on the storytelling they have to intelligently justify their way out of with good storytelling to make it believable. So far in Solo Leveling, I'm just going to assume anything is possible until we're told otherwise.

Bruh you don't even have a full grasp of the world or story yet this question is too premature

RNG Master

They’re both not very unique in their respective genres so it’s kinda hard for me to choose
