In the novel they are communicating in Korean. The anime just has them speaking Japanese for some reason. Gabriel speaks English and well enough Japanese, and Vassago speaks all the languages of all the players present. When P.O.H. talks to Asuna in Japanese most of the players don't understand what they are saying. The language barrier causes alot of problems which is why they believe everything P.O.H. says.
