Lady Ouchiba wasn't the wife. She is a consort of the Taika. She is a revered concubine. Since she is the mother of heir, she has power. Taiko's wife was the one who was beside the dying Taiko in the flash back in the previous episodes. Lady Ouchiba is referred to as Ouchiba No Kata. A title given to a lord's concubine.

Uejiros death served 2 purposes 1) brought peace to the village and household by getting rid of the pheasant 2) served lord Toranaga honorably by offering his life to get yabushige off the real spy's back.

Short summary: Mariko's father was a samurai who served the previous ruler of Japan before the taiko. That ruler was murderous and corrupt to the point where her father betrayed the ruler and assassinated him thats how bad he was. A samurai that defies their lord is dishonorable and must commit seppuku and also kill their whole family line like we saw in the first ep. However, Mariko who was recently married was technically no longer part of that family line any more and had to listen to her husband who ordered her to live even when her whole family was killed and she was left to suffer by living knowing they are all dead and unable to commit seppuku herself to join her family in death. This situation is exactly parallel to fuji Sama who also wished to die after her husband and child were forced to commit seppuku
